Articles of Faith - What We Want Is Free (version sound / wasteland records) ‘82

Articles of Faith were a highly influential Chicago based hardcore punk band (1981-1985) notable for song-writing in a class above most of their contemoraries (and sucessors). The band’s later work, the posthumous ‘In this life’ LP in particular, either founds or foreshadows the emo amd emocore sound. The typical AoF song featured hummable melodies and conspicuous hooks accompanied by lyrics bemoaning the difficulty of finding freedom and fulfillment in a cookie-cutter mass-consumption driven society all delivered at a searing pace. While the band’s influence was blunted by being based in Chicago, they maintained close muscial and thematic ties to the Washington DC / Dischord Records scene. -wikipedia

Really great cover photo, one kid has got his fred on…this photo must of originated in england. One thing that stands out in my mind was these real cheap armbands they gave out at their show…the arm band was like a red ribbon you’d win at a school track meet. I think I still have it kickin around here somewhere…

Nice story about the AoF armbands — I’ve never seen one of those (now maybe I know why . . .)

Thanks for posting this. AoF were and are one of my favorite punk bands.

Hey, I noticed the cover here has a blue tint to it. Mine is a straight-up black & white photocopy, and I’ve always wondered if it’s a bootleg or not, or if one of the pressings was done in that manner. I’ve had it for forever, got it on the cheap long ago.

seems there was 2 pressings of this ep on two different labels, version and wasteland. I think the version with the Black and White sleeve would be the original pressing of 500…? I myself have only known the blue or red sleeve.
2 original pressings of 500 (?) each (Version Sound is the first pressing). 2 different colored Wasteland sleeves, one on red paper, one on blue

also let me add if yours is the straight photocopy black and white sleeve this might be the bootleg reissue.

Thanks, Stunt — good to know. I bought mine back in ‘87. It’s a total photocopied cover. Boot or not, in the end it’s no matter — still a prized possession!

Hey, did you see my comment re: Really Red? Let me know if you need that track –

Great post!!!! AoF were always a favorite, oh the passion and fury. I saw Vic Bondi live in the 90’s and the music was a bunch mellower but his politics were still fiery.

Happy holidays Stunt, Keep up the excellent site!!!

This is an amazing record! One of the best Chicago produced. I saw a copy of this a few years ago that came with a New Years Eve armband, is that the armband you are talking about? Thanks again!

GREAT record! For those that don’t wanna drop the cheese on the original, Alternative Tentacles released the complete discography on two discs. Anyone else think Vic’s onstage antics were kinda like Springsteen’s?

Man AoF rocks — i know virus x (the drummer) and he would play drums on the street corners in chicago — mostly jazz stuff and he would also jam with some other jazz-ish bands at the hothouse or other venues usually geared around the revolutionary communist tip.

What a band! They had some real intelligence and the musical chops to back it up. I dream of seeing bands like this live. Oh, and the photo of the kids did come from England as the kid on the far left of the photo is wearing a Liverpool FC (an English football/soccer team) tracksuit top. More useless information…
