Headcleaners - The Infection Grows (Xcentric Noise) ‘83

Here you have another classic offering from Swedens Headcleaners….The Infection Grows EP. Cover artwork was done by Brian ‘pushead’ Schroeder….I have a hard time believing that pushead drew the whole cover. Seems the titles where added in after the art, and the people were also added in…The only thing I can see being original Pushead art would be the skull and his signature, what you think? Also see this post for more Headcleaners.

Tracklisting
With medication
Epidemic infection
No sense
Invented crap
Piles of flesh
Destruction in mind

The cover art is almost certainly all Brian’s work…
My friend and I used to exchange mail with him back in 1982, and it is representative of SOME of the work he did then…He drew a cover for my best friend’s fanzine which was similarly styled…

The logo and EP title were probably done by the guy who ran Xcentric Noise records: we also wrote to this guy back in 1982, and had a number of his compilation tapes (such as ‘Beating the Meat’) which had similarly styled writing (the way some of the letters slope down to the left at the bottom)…

Brian Pushead also did quite a bit of artwork for the Xcentric Noise man, who used the artwork on his compilation tapes before he started making vinyl records…

Hope that helps!

Nic thats cool you used to exchange mail with pushead in ‘82 but I am still NOT convinced he drew in those SHITTY people…the great skull is all his but all I am saying is to me it looks like someone fucked up his original work.

Well, Pushead is obviously one of those artists who got more “technical” with age… I mean, look at that BYO records comp LP cover he drew… but fuck Pushead, the HEADCLEANERS are what’s great about this post!

Hey Ryan, I agree, fuck PUSHEAD !!!! As an artist,
he hasn’t had an original idea since those byo comps. As usual though, the band he did the artwork for kicks ass. I guess repackaging the same 41 SEPTIC DEATH songs over and over has kept
him “true” to the hardcore scene(either that or livin’ off the YEN from japanese toy companies and MEGLOtallica shirts)after all these years.

Skulls/rotting flesh/eyeballs=BORING!!!!!
HEADCLEANERS 7″=fuck yeah!!!!!1

This is definitely gen-u-ine Pushead work, he drew a couple of tape covers for Xcentric Noise - ‘Raw War’ and ‘Grevious Musical Harm’ and his artwork was used for the Headcleaners 7″ and the Beating The Meat compilation. The guy who ran Xcentric’s (Shesk) was also the first guy to distribute the first Septic Death 12″ in the UK. You gotta remember this was in the very early Eighties, and your doubts in Pushead’s artwork are probably tainted by his later work, I’m mean c’mon… MotleyfuckinCrew for chrissakes… ack!!!

Genius lyrics on Invented Crap. This sort of stuff made me go out and burn down churches! Well at least refuse to go to sunday service anymore when I was a kid.

one of the best & “cohesive” eps by this studio-band. raging pissed off HC with vocals that sound like theyre constantly scolding you!!

glad to see im not the only person who thinks Pushead is completely overrated. the only thing ill give him credit for was opening up the then insular Japanese Punk scene with the US pressing of the Amazing “Thrash Til Death” LP. his artwork may be well done in a technical manner, but when youve drawn the same stupid freaking variations on a rotten skull for almost 30 years, youre gonna get good at it, i guess.

(ok, im sure somebody’s gonna give me some shit now cos one of my ex-bands has an ep released with Pushead artwork on the sleeve. it wasnt by my choice!!)

One of the best Swedish HC bands and I think Wedge is right when he says they were just a studio band. So catchy with great little snare rolls. Simple but effective!
I think the Finnish HC scene at the time was possibly even better. So it’d be cool to see some old Suomi shit on the site.
