I had this on file which was written by someone else, but can’t remember where I got it from.

“The Hated were an Annapolis, MD band in the mid/late 80’s that started out when the nearby DC punk scene was already evolving beyond “hardcore” and adopting more melodic, mixed-tempo song structures with hyper-expressive lyrics exploring emotions rarely articulated in such a manner under punk before. That, in a nut’s hell, was the birth of “emo” with the Rites of Spring leading the way. Good summary of that movement here. The Hated, obviously influenced by what was coming out of DC and Hüsker Dü at the time, released a bunch of great material on demo tapes and records in a four year stretch from 1985 to 1989 that’s still sought after by the cult of record collectors.”

Hope this helped a little.

Man when I saw “The Hated” I got all excited until I saw that it was this one. I’d love to see someone put up the L.A. Hated, they kicked ass.

Yeah me too, make that the HB Hated, cause I think there was one from LA who did not measure up.Their 7 inch “seize the middle east b/w innocent people” was the only record I ever heard that actually sounded like a surf punk record.Ok,Maybe the Chiefs, but not so much.Do you have that or anything else by them? Please, please post if you do.

I was also hoping that it was the Hated from HB. They played at all the legendary places in O.C. , The Cuckoos Nest, Spatz, etc. They put out three 7 inches. All on stress records from 1980-1982.
- Innocent People / Seize The Middle East 7″
- Stereotyped / Pressure 7″
- 2:02 AM / Afraid / Victim Of Lies / Enemy 7″ Please Post it.

Rites Of Spring will always get the “first” credit. The Hated had a different approach while also being punk. They did a song called “Knocking On Your Door” that has two singers singing two different lyrics at different speeds. It’s an amazing song. Hopefully the comp cd I’ve been reading about for years will be released by somebody.

Big thumbs up for the Annapolis, MD Hated. Indeed, there is a 3-CD complete works set, all remastered, that’s been in the works for years. Troubleman Unlimited is suppposed to put it out someday. I have it from a reliable source that the remastering is done, the 3 CDs worth of songs are assembled . . . now we wait for the package to be made available for sale. In the meantime, thanks to Stunt for the mp3s!

i never heard this ep before…interesting…i DID once have their original cassette that pre-dates this ep by about 1 year. the lead-off track on that (a different version of “hey mister”) sounded like “E.F.A.”~era Husker Du with a pseudo-crybaby vocalist; at least to these ears. not bad, really, but not essential. still, theres something i like about this ep, and also the Spastic Rats ep (same label/scene/era).

I have this in my collection, but I have not had a turntable in years. I used to see them at the Crofton Firehall near Annapolis as a kid. Two flanneled bearded guys with guitars. They looked like a couple of hippys but man could they tear it up.

It’s the same version of “Hey Mister” on both the cassette and the 7″, although the mix is a little different.

Loved this since I got a (poor) dub many a year ago. Total HUSKER DU worship, but they did it so well. Even the acoustic tracks have a high level of intensity. Almost crosses the emo (in the original sense) line, but stays enough on the punk side of things. Yeah, I can see these guys being bearded-up!

I took the place of Bob Hadad the original drummer and Chalmer Lumary Played Bass taking Joe Woods place. We played alot of great places. If anybody out there knows were some of the old boys are let them know I’m still out there playing good old punk like Duane Peters and Kari Martinez From Shattered Faith. I Played for Kronic Disorder And The Hated It kicked some Serious Ass!!!
