Misguided - Bringing It Down (Reality) ‘82

Heres the first Misguided single released in ‘82, very ruff and unfulfilling but some of you might enjoy it. Couple of the members went on to form Das Damen. Mad at the World has re-released all the bands material on one disc.
Mad at the World writes… The MISGUIDED songs are compiled! The artwork is done! So, you can expect Misguided Fuggets, 1981-1984 to be out very shortly. An uber-comprehensive retrospective from the annals of first wave NYHC, this CD will include both the Bringin It Down 7” (1982) and Options 7” (1983), in addition to rare demos spanning the bands’ career, and other gems, including the “DC Sessions” engineered by Brian Baker (MINOR THREAT, DAG NASTY, BAD RELIGION).

First song reminds me of SOA. I hadn’t heard of these guys before…ya it’s ruff but distortion is goooooooood. Their options ep’s gotta be better though, these songs are pretty simplistic. I’ll check out the re-issue.

the misguided deserve a special chapter in the formation of early new york hardcore. they were key components in and early witnesses of the scene’s formation and were at ground zero when outer-bourough queens and long island bands like heart attack, reagan youth, the mob and the pricks [feat. rick rubin] were all both forming. that and they were always the nicest and smartest guys on the scene.

they played tons of shows with bad brains, nihilistics, false prophets, the undead, kraut and even worse and the out of town bands they played with could fill a book. they championed early noise rock exponants like swans and rat at rat r and an unknown band at the time called sonic youth.

drummer lyle hysen’s enthusiasm is well documented in his damaged goods fanzine, which was basically a bunch of nicely-written, well-laid out, crudely-xeroxed pages stapled together and sold at shows [who does THAT anymore!]. like guillotine, the big takeover and short newz, damaged goods was always jammed with information. the mag also released the now highly-sought-after heart attack ‘god is dead’ 7″. 300 pressed. [yes, i have one and no amount of money will ever pry it from my collection! ever!]

over time the misguided got fed up with the ‘cementhead’ - their word - direction hardcore was taking, eventually expanding the band to a five piece line up. they also started infusing sixties garage in to their sound leaving the burgeoning second generation skinhead faction to basically ignore them as they were no longer ‘hard’ enough. they eventually broke up, with alex, lyle and dave regrouping to become the rock gods, das damen and that, my friends is another chapter and one involving a michael jackson lawsuit!

I’m pretty sure this is going to be re-issued on CD by Mad At The World Records really soon with extra material…

This is the first time I got to hear this EP and it actually sounds better than the second EP. Thanks for posting this.

The Misguided were one of the first half dozen original NYC Hardcore groups that rocked infamous Ave. A spot A7 in the summer of ‘81. The others being The Mob, Heart Attack, Kraut, Undead, The Pricks, Nihilistics, False Prophets, AOD. A ferious live band with energetic lead singer Johnny Riz being as exciting, menacing and unpredictable as Black Flag’s Herny Rollins was on stage. The teenage group matured from the simplistic thrash of ‘81 into a witty (mostly inside humor) hard edged pop style by ‘83. Members of the group (Alex Totino-guitar, Lyle Hysen-drums) later formed Das Damen. (Johnny Karco-bass) went on to play with Heart Attack founder Jesse Malin in several projects and then later with Dee Dee Ramone. The Misguided were from Queens and their influences spanned from The Ramones to british groups like U.K. Subs and The Stranglers as they also adopted ‘the wearing all black look.’
