NEOS

NEOS - “Hassibah Gets The Martian Brain Squeeze” ep (Alandhiscar Records) ‘82

Q: How do you qualify “angry” in an art form (i.e. punk) that is synonymous with the term? A: The 2nd ep from Victoria Canada’s NEOS, which twenty-plus-years-on still stands as one of the angriest, most explosive, and above all, fastest punk records North America has produced. Listen for yourself, necessary flaws & all (feedback fragments, false starts, etc). In addition, NEOS did THE RAMONES one better by not only giving you a punk record you could learn to play along to (yeah, good luck!), but actually including inserts with the chord & drum structures hand-written for each song! If only I had a scanner, you’d ALL be playing along right now.
Thanks again to website Kill From The Heart http://homepages.nyu.edu/~cch223/ for the cover, who have also housed the lyrics for you. Oh, and the title? Allow NEOS to explain it themselves: “The Martian Brain Squeeze had it’s origins in Ancient Greece, credit being given to the wrestler Ephistomenes, who accidentally employed the unknown hold and broke his opponent’s head off…”

Tracks
Destruct
Theyll Destroy Themselves
(almost) Typical Obligatory Anti-Government Song

Where Did You Go Wrong
Just Like The Rest
Look Around In Despair
Conscripts
Jungle Beat So It Seems

Opposition To All Violence Even If Committed In Self Defense

It may be the best of all posts we’ve got here. I first heard it in my early teens. Now I’m 37 and it still remains one of the most extreme and angry stuff I’ve ever heard. At that time it was hard to believe how someone could play so fast… NEOS is surely among the pioneers of speed.
Posers from today should be scared listening to stuff like this.
This site is going to be a genuine punk/hardcore memorial.
Thanks for the great post & be angry!
    Hugs from Brazil!!!

I have this on the NEOS - CD discography that was released in the mid 90’s. Great 7″, much better than their first, “End All Discrimination”. There was a third 7″, “Fight With Donald” that was released at the same time as the CD with live/reh recordings from the 80’s. It’s a great record too, not sure why it didn’t go on the CD…

At least one member of this band (possibly more) went on to play in MEXICAN POWER AUTHORITY, a great punk/pop/prog/jazz/noise band that’s released loads of stuff. In fact, I checked out NEOS after M.P.A. because of the connection. M.P.A. were noisy in a different sense, nothing like the raw energy of the NEOS 7″s.

    Great post!

Still some of the craziest hardcore I’ve ever heard. Goofy in the extreme, yet having a real sly intelligence. Not listened to it for ages. I’m gonna give it a good listen to when I get home. True to say they don’t make ‘em like this anymore. Love to hear the first 7″ , too.

what a great record! ranks up there with the weirdness that is rundimentary peni and law & order. anyway, there are two different versions of this record. the first is the self-released version, which is a packaging nightmare complete with a bunch of tablature sheets that one has to fashion in to a proper booklet. whatadisaster! the second pressing came out on nyc’s own rat cage records - home to the beastie boys, heart attack, virus, crucial truth and agnostic front - who remastered the sound and tweaked the packaging to make it more, er, coherant. where can i find the cd?

  5. surlyoldpunk Says:

Fuggin’ rad. I almost posted the “end all discrimination” 7″ a couple weeks ago but, thought it might be too extreme for some folks who visit this site. Back in the day I always told anyone who would listen “D.R.I. who???? dig the NEOS”.

Bryan- schizophrenic records from Canada put out the neos cd awhile ago. I don’t think it’s available anymore but if you have trouble finding it, get ahold of me. I have all the 7″s(including the posthumously released “fight w/donald” and the cd and I’ll hook you up.

  6. wedge Says:

i wouldnt go dumping the CD right yet. theres a practice track on it thats NOT on “fight with donald”. the cd is great if you dont have the vinyl, but buyer beware-its taken from some SCRATCHY vinyl copies.

im guessing this is a universal problem with the original vinyl masterings, as my “End All Discrimination” looks stone-mint, but plays like its pressed on sandpaper.

reminds me of when i first heard “destruct” on MRR radio in the summer of ‘83…i was floored, & did NOT rest easy until i tracked this ep down a year or so later…this record still lays waste to 99% of modern North American HC coming out these days…genuine adolescent angst from some SERIOUS rural misfits…one of the most special PUNK records of all time, and i’ll go homeless before i ever part with my personal copy…

hey Bobby- why didnt you add the Live June ‘84 tracks you have on tape to your post??? that wouldve KILLED!!!

oh yeah,NEOS sorta mutated into SLUDGE CONFRONTATIONS in 1984 & put out at least 1 demo. the one i heard sounded just as spastic & intense as any NEOS recording ive ever heard, but the Guitar sound was so thick, it just COMPLETELY destroys HELL!!! these dudes were truly special…

  7. booblikon Says:

the live tape is actually from July 1982 and it’s insane alright, but most if not all of those songs are represented here in their studio fashion. besides i gotta save something for the “killed by demos” site someone is bound to start…soon…any day now…;D (winkwinknudgenudgesaynomore)

  8. ake Says:

This EP is one of my favorites of all time.

Neos was a huge inspiration when we started our band in ‘83…it’s fast and got really nice guitar riffs.

Songs like “They’ll destroy themselves” and “Conscripts” are hardcore classics…

Living just across the water from Victoria meant that I was fortunate enough to witness the live attack of Neos on several occasions. Live, the band was a frenzied blur of pure chaotic energy.

Another post-Neos band worthy of note was the mid-eighties crossover band Kev played guitar for, Mission of Christ. MoC definitely leaned fairly far to the metal side of things and released a split 7″ with my band of the day, Fratricide.

    Post that split 7″!

Sounds like they had some influence on Pushead’s band.
    Was it Septic Death?

    pusheads band = septic death

Hey I made both the Neos CD discography and the “Fight With Donald” EP. I’ve got two labels: Break Even, and Supreme Echo. I also produced the Sludge Confrontations CD. The only thing Schizophrenic did was help out with some financing. Anyhow, i wanted to let everyone know that in 2007 there’ll be a definitive LP of the Neos tentatively titled “Time Trapped”, including the full live ‘82 set, both EP’s, the unreleased track from “FWD” EP, PLUS (!!!) many unreleased trax from their final ‘83 material!!! Watch out for the Jerk-Ward 7″EP (1981-84) out in 2 months including Steve and Kev from the Neos. more news later!! and please don’t bootleg these guys! they are my very close friends!

Neos are one of my favorite bands! I love this record. So angry and fast. This is how hardcore should be made.

Flesh ripping hardcore, this is what the kids today need a heavy dose of, pure, primal hc rage. WOW
