Mass Appeal - Nobody Likes A Thinker EP

Mass Appeal - Nobody Likes A Thinker EP 12″ (Waterfront Records) 1986

Well I’d guess that I’m probably responsible for the new Australia category being made since it suddenly appeared after I bitched about there not being one in my last post, so I might as well get it off to a good start hahaha. The first word that comes to mind when trying to describe Mass Appeal is simply “thrash”. This is basically fast hardcore with a metal touch. While researching information on this band, I found out they’ve just recently re-issued this album on CD this year:

“Remastered and re-issued version of a true Aussie classic. 39 songs over 2 discs including a whole stack of rare live and demo tracks: Plus the complete set from their legendary D.R.I. support show! Includes 20 page booklet with Ben Brown’s amazing artwork throughout.”

http://missinglink.net.au/ is where to get that.

So yeah, I don’t know who Ben Brown is but I guess he did the cover art for this album. He’s probably someone important that I’m going to seem like an idiot for not knowing, or maybe not, who cares. Anyway, this album is actually a 12″ but it might as well have been a 7″ considering it’s only 7 songs. Rat In A Hole is a blazing fast song that shows off their metal influence and is by far the best song, while I.V. Me and Deadheads are also highlights of this album. This EP is for people who don’t mind a little metal in their punk such as (D.R.I. I guess) Attitude Adjustment, Intense Degree, Ludichrist, etc.

Tracks
Rat In A Hole
Can't Forget
I.V. Me
Deadheads
Forgiving
Pissed On Life
Beginning Of A Hurt

Props from Brazil to this great aussie band. It’s surely part the hc/punk history and deserved to be among “classic” stuff in my opinion!
Just great to remember that age!
Thanks to Crass_must_die!!!!

Great band! I have this 12″ and the “Bar Of Life” 7″ EP. Both fucking rip. Relapse Records (of all labels) is releasing a Mass Appeal CD in January 2007 with this 12″ and 17 “bonus tracks”. Still would like to get that Aussie double CD though.

The were a great band. Met a couple of them when they came out to Cali for holiday. I wish I still had the shirt they gave me of the cover.

About time someone posted this somewhere to show what australia is capable of. One of their claims to fame is a photo of James Hetfield wearing one of their shirts on the cover of Sounds magazine in the 90s. Not suprisingly the band sold way more shirts than records. They sold the rights to a shirt to the aussie merch label Acme and ended up selling about 9000 shirts and thats how they funded the record “jazz”.

To the best of my knowledge Ben Brown was just a surfer that was in Brett’s younger brothers year at school. They all hung out and surfed together and Ben would draw on peoples boards and shirts. Brett was so into it he got Ben to do the art. I dont know if Ben even did any art for other bands?

Original 1st pressing had a white cover, instead of this pink one. Btw Mass Appeal were from Sidney. Appart from (and compared to) this LP and the Bar Of Life EP (’87), their other records are lame, so i’ve been told, i prefer keep a good impression of the band by not listen to those late records… just a matter of tastes surely. An other band to check out in the same vein is Arm The Insane.

and about time, Massappeal fuckin’ rooled! saw them a heap of times in Sydney late Eighties/early Nineties - I’ll go as far as to say one of the most explosive bands I’ve seen live… ripping. They are back, and gigging occassionally #))

Just registered for this site today, first post!
I saw Massappeal in Melbourne for the reunion, wasn’t so great. I have The Bar of Life 7″ and its a corker though! Ben Brown was sort of the artist to have do your flyer’s and covers it seems. Check out the cover for the double LP of Aussie punk/hc/other weird stuff called “The Not So Lucky Country”, theres also a lot of his art on the flyer’s inside the gate fold sleeve. Sort of an Aussie Pushead?

Actually while I do agree that this is a classic, their second record ‘Jazz’ is even more ferocious (a la Flag’s ‘Damaged’ or the ‘bar of life’ 7″) and for my money a must have and easily one of the greatest Aus punk records ever..
