Much as everyone agrees that so much hardcore/punk nowadays consists of pale rehash of styles that were far more urgent and powerful 25 or 30 years ago, the one genre that has only improved dramatically has been the real deal crustcore. Compared to such relatively weak and half-realized influences as Amebix, Deviated Instinct and early Both Thrower, the likes of Stormcrow, Effigy and AGE just demolish their own inspiration.

Nah, most of those bands are hilarious, Stormcrow is the most insipid shite I’ve ever heard, its simply bad heavy metal that not even the metal kids like, and as far removed from the spirit of punk rock rock as it gets.

DI was a great band live, Mid’s guitaring was particuarly great, this 7″ did them no favours as its bloody awful production wise, but their LP is far better…..

Stormcrow’s not bad at all, it’s ultra heavy and brutal. The DI LPs are actually worse than this, and none of it, good or bad, really has anything to do with punk anyways– crust is just rough metal with preteen politics instead of occult lyrics. I’d rather own one Real Kids or Flamin’ Groovies LP than every tired record of grunting metal ever made by English vegetarians with stupid haircuts, wouldn’t you? Best crusty band going nowadays, easily, is Inepsy– and there’s more Motorhead and Sacrilege going on there than Axegrinder or Hellbastard.

ummmmmmmmm……not for me. Sounds like slow, torturous, Slayer to me. Sorry.

Haven’t heard this since it’s release and boy it surely doesn’t hold up very well. Later U.K.(mid 80’s) bands were so hit or miss. I stayed true to the thrash side of the fence listening to HERESY,RIPCORD,STUPIDS, S.A.S. and the like. Most of the U.K. doom/crust/metal were quite sketchy with the exception of SACRILEGE who also later turned to total shit.

Thanks for posting it though……….. good to hear it again from an historical perspective.

Gotta agree it’s a bit slow, never really liked anything on Peaceville (’cept for the Electro Hippies). Much like surly I prefered Ripcord & the Stupids. Neurotic Text’s comment mentioned Bolt Thrower so ”In Battle..” has been on the turntable for the first time in years… Thanx!!

yeah, while i believe most early roots crust bands weren’t that great, i wouldn’t slam amebix into that category. amebix, to me, just as discharge, are a foundation for certain styles/genres of punk. not everyone may dig that kind of hardcore, with its orthodoxy and all, but a lot of great raw/intl h/c bands today got something from amebix.

Whoops… I used to have this EP, but I sold it away as I thought it to be unlistenable. Now that I saw this record here, I started to wonder if it was as poor as I remember it to be, so I checked these songs out after all these years. Ok, it still does not sound too great to my ears so I’m kind of relieved. Mostly it’s just bad metal.

Anyway, one has to admit that they were one of the British crust pioneers. But, some bands (such as Amebix, for example) were great, while some bands (such as Deviated Instict, or even Antisect on their 7″), did not succeed so well.

When it comes to crust, I think that Neurotic Text’s comment “crust is just rough metal with preteen politics instead of occult lyrics” is misleading. Of course, it depends on what you consider to be crust. Nowadays people may classify as diversed bands as Amebix, Wolfbrigade, Disclose, Heresy, Hiatus or AOS to be crust bands. Personally, I have never liked metal, but I really enjoy good crust bands.

For those interested in the roots of crust I recommend Felix Havoc’s creditable columns in Profane Existence some years ago (sorry, can’t remember in what issues they were…).

There were (thinking of Ripcord etc.) and still are (too many to even mention, but yesterday I once again listened to Fall Of Efrafa’s LP and thought that it’s a contemporary (neo)crust masterpiece) loads of GREAT crust bands, and I dig them as much as I dig all the great punk rock or hardcore bands. Unfortunately, I STILL do not dig Deviated Instinct, but it was nice to hear this record again, and notice that I didn’t make a mistake when I sold it…

Wow DI arnt getting any respect here. Well the first time I listend to DI I only like a few songs, but after a short while I grew to love all the rest. Personally, I love DI and I can listen to them all day. Also, how can you say that crust doesnt have anything to do with punk?

Hey thanks for posting and giving me an opportunity to hear this band. I was always curious about them, had heard good things, bad things, and whatnot. But I do have to say that this isn’t really what I’m into…Sorry. It just doesn’t sound like crust to me so much as just straight up heavy metal. Maybe it’ll grow on me, but for now, I’m not really digging it…..

How come track 3 is 192 bit-rate and the rest 256?

Just like many early crust bands like DI, Amebix and some others it does’nt sound like crust. I’d still take this rec over Amebix, if just the sound quality were better…

Personally, Deviated Instinct are one of my top five favourite bands. They are raw no holds barred stenchcore, and great to watch live.

Some bad crap has been said here…Crust is Metal for Punks if its bad or not its relative of the taste…i am a big fan of Metal since the 80s and if i can dig a very clean and technical metal band and still can love this DI stuff -xcept for rocknroll conformity which was boring thrashcore- its someone out there who has a problem. I grew up with clean cut Metal but also dirty stuff like Venom, Celtic Frost , Possessed, so its clear this stuff applies perfectly for some of us who love metal but also love good lyrics.
Stormcrow = good band Inepsy = good band Sacrilege = fantastic band even the third album is not a bad doom album the vocals too weak and melodic for the sound i guess its the only problem the second is for fans of Nasty Savage/Slayer/Trouble.
AMEBIX are untouchable! Period.

Allot of people here don’t know what they are talking about. D.I is as crusty as it can get!
Crust used to be a term for Uk style metal/punk “crossover” period in the mid 80’s and 90’s spinoffs from around the world. Everything from some hardcore bands that were inspired by Discharge, Amebix etc. and anarchopunk who mixed it with thrash metal/extreme metal to some early grindcore and death metal that bands who were kind of punk/hippie that had that typical crusty sound of the times. Were part of the same crust scene. Who ever that didn’t like this release i recommend checking out their other stuff as each release is different. Crust is basicly how they did “crossover” over in Uk. Shortly put Hippie Metal Punk!

If this is bad metal than I love me some bad metal. The bands that came out of the U.K. during the mid to late 80’s were the best thing going at the time. From Amebix and Hellbastard to the Stupids and Heresy to Napalm Death and Bolt Thrower to Doom and Electro Hippies and Extreme Noise Terror and I would say Sore Throat but they made an album against the Napalms so I wont. Oh yeah, and Concrete Sox and Chaos U.K. Damn! I always thought the American bands that copied them were kind of lame though. Except for Nausea and Neurosis. I always wanted to like Missery because they seemed like good guys, but the music just didn’t quite do it for me. Still, I went to a lot of thier shows. I’m Rambling.
