LIFE’S BLOOD-Defiance e.p. (Vermiform records VMFM03) 1991

Smart and uncomprimising NYHC hardcore from a band that drew it’s influences from suprisingly typical, thuggish NYHC bands of the early 80’s. These guys cleverly sang about all that was wrong with the N.Y. scene at the time and called out straight edgers, scene unity and questioned their commitment to it. This was originally released on Combined Effort records and after quickly selling out, got a re-release from newly formed, Vermiform records. I avoided this record when it came out, thinking it was typical of a music scene I already didn’t have much interest in….. Boy was I wrong. I got this record for (suprisingly) free when I mail-ordered stuff from Vermiform records. I was blown away by this and it remains one of my fave NYHC records of all time. Guitarist Adam Nathanson went on to form BORN AGAINST and slowly over time, this record got forgotten about. Such a shame…………………hopefully this post fixes that, though !!!!

The Middle Aged Youth blog also posted this a couple years ago. Those guys wrote a far more eloquent and informative post about the record including some insightful commentary from LIFE’S BLOOD singer Jason O’Toole. Check it out HERE

Tracks
Never make a change
Left me behind
Stick to it
Guilty as charged
Youth enrage
Not for the weak
Catch our breath
It's not in your heart

Along with Born Against “Industrial Relations” EP and Infest “Slave” 12″, the best American hardcore record of the past twenty years.

This is classic and this band goes down as one of the best along with Straight Ahead, Side by Side, and Abomanation. I remember when this came out everyone immediately christened them as the future of hardcore and I think they were around for about 1 year. I had the original 7 inch, sold it and then bought the Cd in the late 80’s. I could listen to this all day.

This music hurts just like their words do.
We all never make a change, because we’re satisfied!? It seem to be really current issue…
Fucking classic !!!
Thanks to SurlyOld!

…well I haven’t met anyone in the past ten years or so who ever heard of my band…which is how I like it. I never saw a dime from it, but since I am going to download all of these other hardcore tracks for free, I guess we’ll call it even-steven.

Life’s Blood as the future of hardcore? The future of hardcore, in my case, turned out to be a late 30’s, soccer playing cop, singing along with free downloads of Negative Approach while driving the kids to private school in the Element.

If you want to know why I dropped out of the NYHC scene right when LB was getting marginal acceptance (I can’t use the word popular) just listen to the first track, “Never Make a Change.” I didn’t want to be like the guys in that song, (YOT) ever. Back then I was something of a law abiding, educated thug, who lived to be hated, (or more accurately, liked to be dis-liked) so popularity of any kind made no sense to me.

That and the song “Katch Our Breath” - the NYHC scene became just the opposite of the happy little utopia described in that song. Four bucks for four bands…and a claw hammer to the back of you head from a white power Puerto-Rican…no thanks!

Plus I had to go found S.H.A.R.P. if you can believe what you read on Wikipedia.

Or, alternatively, if you dig up fanzines from the 80’s, I dropped out to wear suits and make money. (I do have an MBA, but also still have a flight jacket and oxbloods, so hmmmm…which is true?).

I can get e-mail at antraeindubh@yahoo.com if you have anything for me…I might notice it between all of the spam for Pen1$ enlargement.

Sorry there was nothing too insightful above. Enjoy the downloads above with my blessings, and consider it your Christmas gift from me. Now what the f— are you getting me?
