INNOCENTS-Masho ep (Dirty Informal Section D.I.S. o04) 1989
Shizuoka city hardcore here. This was the fourth release for D.I.S. records and the first for the INNOCENTS. Not much is known about these guys, and aside from some tracks on the “Target Dictator” compilation(which may have been released after the band was around), this 7″ was their only release. Blazing stuff anyhow, not unlike the music from the same place and time period(SO WHAT, DEADLESS MUSS, RUSTLER etc.) Any more info on these guys would be helpful.

Sex Complex Class - Genin fumei 7″‘ flexi (MCR-005) Aug ‘85
Here’s another early MCR band, SCC had a 2nd EP in 86, tracks on a comp, both on MCR, and… that’s all I know about it. Both of their EP’s are good, and i won’t say much otherwise i’ll say nonsenses… just judge yourself by the noise. Waltz was MCR-006 so this one is the release just before.

STAR CLUB EARLY SPECIAL

Star Club, wow…most people slag this band as nothing but a 2-Bit, Japanese Sex Pistols knock-off. Their image & visual style is no argument against this opinion, but it is NOT AT ALL accurate for their musical style!
originally formed in the city of Nagoya sometime in 1977, they have the dubious distinction of being the FIRST Japanese punk band, ever. one could definately dispute this statement, but whatever…thats what the history books claim.
the folowing posts are an effort to not only dispell the BS reputation they have as a garbage Pistols rip-off, but a tribute to one of the longest running & still active bands in the history of punk rock. these records will keep to the years of 1977-1984; when they were doing their best stuff EVER!!
endnote- there are almost 100 different STAR CLUB releases that have been available over the years, and they are STILL very active as a band to this day. at various points in time, there have been members of GISM, KIKEIJI, STALIN, THE POGO, etc…that have been somewhat involved with this band. some real legendary hard-hitters of Japanese punk!!
another interesting note is that in 1987, they did a full-scale tour through Australia & New Zealand; something only previously done by the Dead Kennedys.
there are MANY recomemded LP’s from this band( “Live Hot & Cool” City Rocker CR-OOE from 1983 / “Hello New Punks” TJC label 28JAL-16 from 1984 / “This Is Punk Punk Punk” TJC Label 28JAL-3009 from 1985 / “Very Best Of-Kings Of Punk-10th Anniversary Album” Picture Disc Club The Star CSR 00B from 1987 / “(japanese title)” Invitation VICL-13 from 1990 / “Pyromaniac” Speedstar VICL-60367 from 1999 ),
but the following posts will cover their early 7″eps & obscure flexi tracks that are their most vital stuff…

STAR CLUB - Club Take One EP (Club The Star 001 SCR002) ‘81
Officially, the first vinyl release form the Star Club. If you want to get technical, there was a previous ep called “Go To Hell” which was recorded live in early 1978, but was only ever in an edition of 4 test-pressings until it was properly pressed & packaged as a part of the GREAT “1977-1983″ box set, which also includes the often counterfieted “1979″ demo cassette.
this being the first listen anybody actually had of this band outside of live gigs, it finds them in a VERY raucous state & is pretty far beyond most of the “classic” stuff that previously came from Japan’s early punk scene (mirrors,lizzard,p-model,zelda, etc…). light years ahead of the pseudo-garage type rock on the “go to hell” ep, this ep SMOKES!!! the 3 tracks on side A are on par with any early world punk release & the 2 dirgey tracks on side 2 are in a league of their own. “The Times” is quite possibly my favorite song by this band & proves that you can play slow & still destroy anything in your path!!!

STAR CLUB - Shut Up! EP (Club The Star CSR003) ‘82
Recorded in June of 1982, there in an obvious drop-off from the previous 2 eps. the style has gone more towards a “traditional” punk style. this is in direct contrast to the thrashier stuff that was just starting to come out of the Tokyo area at the same time. maybe they were in a cultural vacuum. maybe they just didnt give a shit & just wanted to play PURE unadulturated PUNK!! heres where the shit gets ugly…this was their 1st record to adopt a style of “Pistols” worship on a couple of tracks (”kick about” & “god save the punk rock”), and there sems to be a bit of a “post-punk” style on the track “kill the sun”. the other 2 tracks just let it rip in a classic PUNK style. still a great one, but the end was now on the horizon for this band…

STAR CLUB - 3 Fan Club Flexi discs ‘84

A total KILLER!! theres a reason this is on every want list on the planet!! rockin’ fast punk with silly vocals & a total catchy hook!! the sleeve notes claim a May 1984 recording date, but it definately sounds earlier. as far as i can tell, this was only ever available as a piece of the “1977-1983″ box set, which i do not have. check the dates & dispute for yourself…

ANOKO NI HITOMEBORE

another limited fan club flexi, this one is in a classic ” ‘83″ style of HC Thrash, but obviously has a joke vocal track. musically, it sounds like an outtake from 1985’s “this is PUNK PUNK PUNK!” LP, but the sleeve states a February 1984 recording date…whatever…yet another part of the “1977-1983″ box set…

HA!

and, in closing, i’ll give you the bonus flexi that came with the initial copies of the legendary “Hello New Punks” LP from 1984. this lp is a legend of Japanese punk, but it came a couple years after the initial surge faded & hindsight shows this LP to be a bit lackluster compared to the standard of HC Punk that the rest of the world was producing at the time. no matter, this flexi is a GREAT punk track with a snotty vocal style that should not go unnoticed!!

WALTZ - Flexi EP (MCR Company, Oct) ‘85
I know nothing about this band. This flexi is pretty neat though. Two rough but somewhat melodic tracks of typical early Japanese HC. I know they were also on a comp LP on MCR, but that’ s all I got. Anyone got any more info?

DAMNABLE EXCITE ZOMBIES - Suck Your Soul 7″ (Amok Records) ‘92
My first Post here, hope you´ll enjoy.
The DAMNABLE EXCITE ZOMBIES - Suck Your Soul 7″ was released in Germany via Amok Records (AMOK 007) back in ´92, distributed in Spain by B-CORE and in Japan by MCR.
DEZ were no big names in the Japan scene back in the days, but the 7″ is still on of my favorited Japan Trashcore.

DEADLESS MUSS - “I Will…” (EP / D.I.S. Records 003 /1000 pressed) ‘85
From the city of Shizuoka…a city regarded by all of Japan as the most “boring city on earth”…Mt. Fuji ; the world landmark & destination for most Japanese suicides, is located VERY close to there…also,in the 1980’s, an AMAZING HC Punk scene THRIVED!! Deadless Muss , So What , Innocents , Zamza , Rustler , Swindle Bitch, etc…mostly names that mean nothing to the casual HC fan, but freaks of Japan stuff understand the DEVESTATION these bands created. further proof that there is something to be said for the combination of boredom & punk rock!!
this was the 3rd release of the DIRTY INFORMAL SECTION label (the previous others being the debut 1-sided 8″ flexi-discs of Deadless Muss & So What), and was their last release before hooking up with the legendary SELFISH label & changing their sound more than just a bit.
theres a couple things that make this EP totally shine…they were only 16-17 years old when it was recorded & manage to have a VERY rough & gruff sound far beyond their actual ages…and, there is a track called “future memory” at the end of side B that has a very atypically “japanese” stance to suicide. i wish i could read the actual Kanji script of these lyrics, cos the English chorus of “Never give up your life / Time heals all sorrows” DEFINATELY is in direct contrast of the “stoic” Japanese stance/attitude of “kill yourself before you are shamed”. anybody who can provide a translation,PLEASE DO SO!!
anyway, this ep is absolute destruction; the way the HC PUNK gods meant it!!!
Tracks
Never Say Die
Peace Go Away
Freedom & Rights
God Willing
To Do Nothing
Future Memory

Great Japanese hardcore punk in the vein of GISM, Baws, Lip Cream and Zouo. I don’t know much about this group except the music is powerful and kicks ass. You can’t go wrong with this one!
