Slipknot - Slipknot (rev:13) ‘89

Ok let me get one BIG thing outta the way here…This is NOT the band from Iowa that wear costumes, this Slipknot does not need to hide behind masks…No shame for their music, and anyhow they did use the name first. This single is a shredder, strange for a Rev. band but noneless one of the better singles they (Rev.) every released. I had to post this one to give these guys the exposure they deserve(d). Seems when I talk about slipknot “the hardcore one, not the Iowa one” kids dont have a clue what band im talking about…so here you go. Not alot was known about this band in my circles…please fill us in if you got any info about the band.

First of all - I just pulled out a bunch of stuff to rip that I planned on posting up and this 7″ was one of them. So you beat me to this post by a couple of days. Fucker! J/K

But damn this record is great. It was a total shocker when I first heard it, since it sounds like absolutely nothing else that Rev ever released. I’ve loved it since day one though, it reminds me of the almighty Antidote at times. “Try to help you think… in a positive way so you can find what you’re looking for…” Goddamn. There was an extra track from the same session called “Some Friend” that didn’t make the EP but was later released on the Revelation 15-year anniversary comp called “Revelation 100″.

And I know fuck-all else about them, so you’re not alone. I’m anxious to see if anybody out there can cough up some info.

This was that band that everyone seemed to miss even if they had most the other Revelation releases. I haven’t heard it in forever as I used to spin a friend’s copy when we were roommates but never owned it myself. Revelation pressing #s put it at one pressing of 5000. Fairly large but not nearly the #s of some of their other releases.

Snarling vocals, hectic strings, pounding skins.
Love this. Reminds me a little of Deep Wound. In the croosover period but on teh punk sid erather than metal.

I remember when I got this record. I liked them cause they sounded like the hardcore version of The Accused(a lil bit). The only guy I knew who listened to hardcore back then hated em, but he think Into Another was the best band on Revelation. He’s stupid.

I know nothing about this band at all.

Gacco what you asking…? Why this group used the name Slipknot? You saying they ripped it from the Iowa Slipknot? Bro you’re sadly mistaken…this is the one and only ‘real’ Slipknot, they came along way before the Iowa one. Please read the post before you comment.

I talked to Jordan @ Revelation not long after this record came out about getting Slipknot to play in DC, and he said they were really lazy and barely even played any shows in NYC, just liked to get together, smoke pot and write some rockin’ tunes. I would’ve been pretty happy if Rev had turned in this direction, with the kinda COC influence or whatever, but it didn’t and this is one of the last purchases I made from them.

wow, i thought i was the only person in the world who LIKES this ep. i remember getting it when it came out & all the sXe/REV clones thought it sucked. figures. not many in the whole neo-youth crew had an appreciation for well played HC that didnt have breakdowns/danceparts & there were always whispers that these guys werent “true to the edge” or whatever. i think this ep & the 1st WARZONE ep are the true shining gems in the whole REVELATION discography.

SLIPKNOT were from New Haven, Connecticut. Stiemy (bass/ vocals) was previuosly the singer in FATAL VISION who appeared on the “Connecticut Fun” compilation LP (INCAS,1985). “Connecticut Fun” was also YOUTH OF TODAY’S vinyl debut before officially becoming a “NYHC” band. Stiemy stopped playing music after SLIPKNOT and took up art and a career as a chef. New Haven at the time was the base of operation for Revelation Records. SLIPKNOT were on a steady diet of C.O.C., THE ACCUSED, BATHORY, CELTIC FROST, SUICIDAL TENDENCIES, RICH KIDS ON L.S.D. (R.K.L.), weed, and beer. They never were straight edge ever! It is true that they were lazy and didn’t gig much. Chang (drums) also stopped playing music after SLIPKNOT. In Chang’s younger years he was a bit of a pyro and torched part of Yale University. ‘F’ (guitar) went on to play drums in another New Haven hardcore with me called MALACHI KRUNCH. I did some grunt work for REVELATION back in those days and I did the lettering graphics on the SLIPKNOT EP. I do remember the SLIPKNOT project being quite controversal in the REVELATION world of straight edge drama. But nowhere as controversal as REVELATION’S decision to put the neo-nazi band YOUTH DEFENSE LEAGUE on their “The Way It Is” compilation LP. Where Y.D.L. openly thanks well known racist bands like SKREWDRIVER and BRUTAL ATTACK.

Stunt, thanks for the kind words. Here in another bit of trivia for you. Originally REVELATION RECORDS was going to be called SCHISM RECORDS. Jordan had me draw up the logo. I even drew up the first WARZONE EP labels with the SCHISM logo. Jordan’s label partner Ray (YOUTH OF TODAY)Cappo hated the name SCHISM. SCHISM was scrapped. So they went with the more positive REVELATION. A few years later Porcell also of YOUTH OF TODAY had a side band called PROJECT X. The PROJECT X EP was released on SCHISM RECORDS (!?!) which also came with a SCHISM zine, using the logo that I had drawn up a few years earlier.
I should have known better before REVELATION got off the ground YOUTH OF TODAY asked to draw the cover for their first ep on POSITIVE FORCE which was to be titled “Crucial Times”. I drew it up and it got scrapped for the title change “Can’t Close My Eyes”. I wasn’t too pissed off because I really liked the photo on the cover of Ray flexing his head.

Well, I enjoy every sub metal genre… and I must admit, this Slipknot is killer, They should have kept recording and we all would have became fans.. But for the record I also believe (Iowa) SlipknoT is good. Although their new album all hope is gone, is CRAP! But any REAL MAGGOT would agree that , the 1st demos and the album Iowa are the best pieces from slipknot by FAR. And I hate the fact that people confuse REAL MAGGOTS to mainstream fa..ots emo supposable “maggots” they get into slipknot for their popularity and not for the actual music, they think its “cool” and “hip” because slipknot has tracks titled “the heretic anthem” and such “satanic” related lyrics, but in fact they don’t know jack sh.. they should go research a thing or two, and to you “SATAN666″ dude , 1st, Get a new s.n. because your giving us, satanist a bad name, you lead people to believe your a satanist but your just a confused christian now get off the internet and read your bible, 2nd Learn how to spell it’s METAL not metel, Get a freaking dictionary f’n POSER! and last but not least 3rd, You are not a maggot, your just a fruit cake that thinks that slipknot speaks to you in heart and soul, REAL MAGGOTs understand every lyrical meaning, every intention, and all the facts of Slipknot… Now go turn your iPod on and scroll to your Hanna Montana, and johnas bros. albums . -From a REAL satanist, Dedicated Metal head, and TRUE Maggot!

Now that’s cute ;)
I’m not sure what you mean with ‘metel’ but I just wanted to point out that if you measure quality by the band’s popularity, why are you listening to a band like (the Iowa) Slipknot in the first place?

And if you transfer that thinking to the rest of life (yes, there are more aspects), why would you be (or try to appear to be) a satanist? After all there are certain religious/philosophical branches that are more common. On the other hand you’ve got the plurality of the maggots right. But the ‘for life’ part is wrong, even by Buddhistic reincarnation standards there are more people that aren’t alive in the traditional sense than there are people walking about (on this world).

Also it would seem that we’ve found many planets but no conclusive signs of life, which would prove life very impopular in deed - which in turn would, according to your - I’ll call it flawed - “logic”, be something that you wouldn’t want to touch even with gloves. Still you happily do so. The only thing I could conclude is that you are quite a hypocrite (but there’s nothing wrong with that, so many people are…).

To the one who asked the one if this was the band from the question if this band was on the Resident Evil Soundtrack: It’s not them. Even though that Slipknot started (and got shit recorded) in 1992, there is a slim chance that Shawn (Clown) heard these guys before, most of the Iowa Slipknot’s history from 1992 to 1995… little is known except for the 2 demo tapes, which are REALLY GOOD demos. in 1996 was the MFKR CD, 1997 was CrowZ and the Roadrunner records demo. 1998… i forgot. 1999 was self-titled and Ozzfest. Need to now shit about Slipknot (the Iowa Slipknot anyway) ask me.

You fake “Slipknot” fans(yeah I’m talking about this one) just better be glad that there’s a good band with the same name. Now about 15 more people know about this shitty garage band. You’re right, this “Slipknot” doesn’t need masks, they don’t have to worry about fans annoying them, because they don’t have any. This band’s a joke.

Haha yes!! CT represent! Thanks a ton for posting this often overlooked gem. I had a 4th generation dub tape of this back in the day, and tracking this down has been quite a pain. On a side note, a few years back at one of my old bands gigs, I actually met a dude that knew heard of these guys and not the Iowa band, which was definitely a trip.
