Middle Class - Out Of Vogue (Joke Records) ‘78

Quite possibly the first hardcore record and fastest record made before 1980, Fullerton’s Middle Class broke the ground for the LA hardcore scene. This EP is way ahead of its time, take a listen for yourself to see why this is such classic. Bassist Mike Patton also went on to produce the Adolescent’s Classic S/T Album. As well can’t take credit for this rip. Enjoy.

the middle class also recorded an lp called homeland. more of a post punk concern ala joy division and early echo & the bunnymen but equally great.

Thanks to whoever posted this. I’ve been wanting to hear it. Does the SS “The Original” 1 sided 45 12″ qualify for this site? Someone should hook it up. I’ve only got the bootleg and no means of riping vinyl. Totally hyperspeed pre-80’s shit.

I’m under the impression that the Middle Class were from Santa Ana, not Fullerton. Anyone know for sure?

i’m not surprised their lp would sound like joy division. i first heard the middle class from earcom3 on fast product and didn’t even think to identify them as hardcore, let alone seminal hardcore. to me they sound just like kiwis of the likes of scavengers, desperate measures, unauthorised, etc. ak79 type stuff.

…but it´s not THE Mike Patton, right? The Faith no more one?

It’s not the one from faith no more, it’s a different one.

Middle Class

7 Inch Punk, a great mp3 blog, recently blogged about the Middle Class Out of Vogue 7”. This is regarded by many to be the “first hardcore record” in 1978. While I like other records which came out in that

Im pretty sure they’re from Fullerton. They still live there. If your around check out the brothers stores “Out of Vogue” and i dont know the name of the other one. Both in downtown fullerton right next to eachother both very sucesful stores one a high-end retro furniture and housewares store run by Mike and his wife, the other a trendy boutique with Paul Frank shit and stuff like that. They sell an “official” release cd of all their stuff at the shops, they’ll sign ‘em but dont ask em to play again. O and there’s a website, you guessed it: http://outofvogue.com/

Just discovered your site and it’s amazing!! Got a terrible boot of this record with a different cover. Sounds like it’s from a 10th generation tape. So it’s good to hear a great copy at last. Got the “Tooth & Nail” comp. and both their tracks rule.
It’s between them and BAD BRAINS for the title of the first HC band befpre HC existed & I’d say MIDDLE CLASS are the winners. Anyone disagree?…

definitely one of the greatest, most slept-on california records ever. my bandmate Pauly got me into this in the ‘90, never even heard of them prior.
