The Riptides - Sunset Strip (Able AB006) ‘79

The Riptides formed in 1977 as The Grudge. The band emerged from the Architecture Department of the University of Queensland. In 1978, The Grudge changed names to, firstly, The Neon Steal and then The Numbers. The Numbers were part of the burgeoning Brisbane punk/new wave scene which also gave rise to The Leftovers, The Apartments, The Go-Betweens, The Survivors, Razar, The Humans and The X-Men. In September 1978, The Numbers issued the rare `Sunset Strip’ EP (500 copies) on The Go-Betweens’ Able label. The tracks `Sunset Strip’, `Magic Castle’ and `Rules of Love’ were punchy and energetic and featured a brilliant, English-flavoured 1960s-inspired pop sound.
The band remixed the `Sunset Strip’ EP and reissued it in July 1979, credited to The Riptides (in a pressing of 2000 copies).

Wow, I can’t recall the last time I heard 77 Sunset Strip. Thank you so much for posting this! I used to hear it on Brisbane’s “ratbag radio” 4ZZZ FM back in the day, but even at that time the single was long out of print. Great 7″ers you have posted here, I can’t believe some of the stuff you’ve turned up - keep up the good work.

I’m not sure if this is the place for requests, but in an Aussie / Brisbane punk vein, I’d dearly love to hear Mystery of Sixes - Mystery of Sixes 7″ & also Parameters - Pig City 7″ again. The latter was almost given away at one point (I saw a stack of brand new copies going for a buck), but somehow I never thought to buy it til it was out of print & it just seemed to disappear.

Sounds like 60’s mod/garage stuff. Better than I had expected but a bit weak compared to other Brisbane bands(Razar,Fun Things,Leftovers,Young Identities etc. BIG shoes to fill!!!)

still, great to hear this………..

Well there sure were some great bands to come out of Brisbane …funny for such a ‘Police’ state
The Mystery of Sixes were bloody brilliant and how about the brizzy band the Vampire Lovers.
With all these aussie 70/80’s punk bands getting re-released I thought someone should do the ‘Mystery’s retrospective…There were another snotty punk band The Vampire Lovers , I read that someone in England did a compilation on them…and why nobody’s done the fantastic Razar is beyond me.

This is my favorite single of all time. Is there any chance that we can get any up here for the other Riptides singles, “Tommorow’s Tears/Some Other Guy,” “Only Time,” and “Hearts and Flowers/Sandarama”?

RAZAR were the kings of early brisbane punk,LEFT overs never play’d a full set [always ended in a wrestling mach after two songs].THE UPSETS were good also THE KICKS [young identities].THE DUMB SHOW,PUBLIC EXICUTION,and anything BRUCE ANTON touched..VAMPIRE LOVERS have one good song. What ever happened to HARRY’S mob SPASTIC REACTION ?
