Really Red - Modern Needs (CIA) ‘80

Yet another Texas band…what a great state for hardcore/punk. Really Red - Modern Needs is the bands second 7inch released on cia in ‘80. A couple of great punkrock tracks here, classic…the vocals have a Lee Ving / Jello thing going on. Great guitar sound and overall production for its time. Don’t know much about the band after this single…

Thanks for posting this — my old vinyl copy is pretty hammered, and this sounds great!

Really Red are one of my favorite punk bands. They also released three other 7″ EPs, “Crowd Control/Corporate Settings,” “New Strings for Old Puppets” and “Despise Moral Majority,” as well as two LPs, “Teaching You the Fear” (which I think is one of the best punk LPs, hands down) and “Rest in Pain.” I know there’s a CD of “Teaching You the Fear” floating around, as well as an excellet (but incomplete) one-disc anothology put out by Angry Neighbor records.

Great site — thanks again!

Easily one of the best and most underrated bands of the early (or any) punk years. Evidently they were messing with music before punk broke and focused their energy. As a result they weren’t as strapped into the punk straitjacket as some other bands. Plus we’re weird out here in texas. Even recorded a song (twice) by Perry Webb of Houston art punk instigators Culturcide. On that note there is the story behind their song “pig boy”. But I’m rambling on like the old man I am. Shit. Is that the version of “White Lies” on the seven inch? I thought I remember a different version on the 7 inch than the “Teaching you the Fear” LP. Oh well. Great band, great tunes, great website. Thanks

Hey Lord Xenu — you are absolutely right! It had been so long since I heard it, I’d forgotten they were very different versions!

The version of “White Lies” posted here is the one off the “Teaching You the Fear” LP. The version on the B-side of the “Modern Needs” 7″ is very different (I just pulled it out and played it, to make sure): it’s slower, with a different feel on the vocals, and lots of echo/delay effects. Almost dubby.

Hey 7inchpunk — let me know if you need the track — mine sounds much beter than I remembered (it’s the A-side that’s worse for wear). Though I do not have the means of converting vinyl to MP3 here at home, I could get it done by a friend sometime after X-Mass and pass it on to you.

Thanks for this. I haven’t thought about these guys in ages.

I’ve got one of their singles, but I can’t recall the title right now. Too many years. Too many beers.

[…] Since virtually everyone else seems to have done a Really Red post (myself included) I figured why not throw this one in the mix. New Strings For Old Puppets is the bands fourth and final 7″, and it may just be my favorite (argue amongst yourselves). Originally released in 1982 on the bands CIA imprint this was briefly available again in the early ’90’s on their discography CD which is also OOP. […]
