the Donkeys - What I Want/ Four Letters 7″ (Rhesus) 1979
I know nothing about this band, besides it’s punk/powerpop from Manchester. Anyone?
A friend of mine gave me this one, he got it double in a trade.
It has been on my turntable for 2 weeks non-stop. I got it without a sleeve, but i found
scans on the web. I also found out they did more singles. I am saving up!

Donkeys are an awesome powerpop/punk band! This one you can get cheap at eBay. Turns up often. Then there’s some of the last ones they did like “Listen To The Radio” that is pretty hard to get. Thankfully Japans 1977 Records have re-issued all The Donkeys stuff: http://www.1977records.com
I higly recommend “Don’t Go”!
cheers. seems the 7′ are sold out on 1977records.
but i’ll find them ;-)
thanks for the heads up on the re-issue Peter!
good god! “Four Letters” is practically a note-for-note rip-off of “Disgrace” by the Speedometors from ‘77! shameless, but still pretty great, if a tad too Clash-y.
I can post that Speedometors 7″ if anyone wants.
yeah i’d like to hear that!
I’ve had this 7″ gathering dust in my singles collection for about 25 years, I think I better give it another spin… hahahah!!!
Hey..I can’t download. Is the link dead already?!?!
sorry about the link…it will be fixed tomorrow Nov4 AM
[…] Catchy as hell early punk/powerpop 45 from this London 1st-gen mod punk band. That Donkeys post from last month prompted me to dig this up, as “Four Letters” by The Donkeys is a complete rip-off of this song. “Disgrace” is two years earlier, and better… (B-side is atrocious, not worth posting.) […]
The Donkeys were a 1970s British mod group who appeared on the scene at the same time as The Jam, and whose sound and singer are eerily similar. Just check out their 1977 album “Monkey Business” and see for yourself. The members were: Dave Owen - bass, Neil Ferguson - vocals / guitar, Mark Wellham - drums, Tony Ferguson - rhythm guitar / vocals. Their early records were a mixture of 60’s Pop harmonies, the ‘79 New Wave style, The Crooks and Punk.
